In Parcel City, players take on the role of a dispatcher and work through a virtual work week. The complexity increases from day to day. Answering calls, assigning spontaneous orders to the right vehicles, reacting to unforeseen situations, or keeping an eye on the drivers’ breaks: decisions must be made again and again that influence the course of the game. It’s not just about getting goods from A to B as efficiently as possible. Dealing with drivers and customers, as well as making quick and situation-appropriate decisions, also play an important role.

That is exactly why Parcel City is much more than just an online game for us. Since 2024, we have been using the application as a digital learning and training tool in various areas. In the training of our dispatchers, Parcel City enables us to playfully practise situations from everyday work life. The game is also used in the Logistics and Supply Chain Management 3 course at the ZHAW (Zurich University of Applied Sciences). At the same time, we use Parcel City wherever young people get to know the world of logistics and their career opportunities: at job fairs and on our apprenticeship homepage. This way, interested parties can try for themselves what it means to keep an overview in dispatching and to react to different situations.

The job of a dispatcher is changing. Digitalisation, algorithms and artificial intelligence are increasingly taking over tasks that used to be done manually. At the same time, other skills are becoming more important: quickly recognising situations, making decisions, communicating and dealing with different people. Parcel City taps into this development. Instead of just teaching theory, the players are confronted with situations and have to decide how to react. This turns theory into an interactive learning experience.

The success of this approach was already evident in 2024 at the **Best of Swiss Web Awards, where Parcel City was awarded gold in the ‘Innovation’ category and silver in the ‘Technology’ category. Parcel City was developed by Planzer Paket in cooperation with ZHAW and together with Fiberjungle. What was originally intended to make the profession of tomorrow’s dispatcher experienceable in an entertaining way is now a versatile tool for career guidance, training and further education.
